Hi ben, I just wanted to thank you for the great service upgrading my bolt! the quality of work is beyond expectation. I have not yet had the chance to shoot the rifle, but looking at the bolt I know it will work perfectly. 30 years fixing, modifing car repairs, I see what you have done. I believe its best to have the master do the repair and see how he did it, I am glad to have had you do this mod. I could do it now, but I see how I could have damaged something in the bolt. Thank You Very Much for this service!

I JUST got back in the door from my first range trip using the x39 AR 15 MGI bolt which you relieved the sharp firing pin hole edges. I am pleased as punch to say that around 200 rounds were fired, all brass collected... and not ONE of them have a hole! I was waiting on a Caldwell Brass Catcher so I could be sure of reviewing all the spent brass from the Wolf ammo. This is the same batch of ammo that gave problems previously. Sometime in the next few days I will take some photos of the brass. The primer has a bit of a "cratered" look to it such as one would expect to see on over-pressure rounds, but I am sure this is just a side-effect of the recessing job you did on the bolt face, and not an indicator of over-pressure on this standard factory ammo. I can certainly live with that!
Thanks very much for the EXCELLENT INSIGHT into the issue and the super job you did and so affordably as well. Never would have figured this out without your posting on the internet. Thanks again and MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Mr. Murray - Hello and Merry Christmas! This past weekend I drove to another city to visit a friend and go to the range. Over two days, we put 400+ rounds through my x39 AR with the modified firing pin hole edge you did for me.
The rifle functioned perfectly all weekend, not a single malfunction. Just wanted to give you the follow through... your fix worked! Take care and happy holidays to you and yours.

It took exactly 7 minutes start to finish to replace the pin. I had my 14 Year old son do it. The punch we used was a 1/8th. Very easy to install. The made in USA on top to ensure proper placement was genius. I feel much more secure. Great product..

I just received the vent rib tool today 9/3/11 and put to use immediately. First was on an 870 barrel with more of wave than a dent on the rib. I fixed it in about 5 minute and it looks great. The 2nd was on a 1957 870 magnum. I just bought the gun on the internet and it was described as having a "small dent in the rib". It was actually smashed flat against the barrel in the 2nd segment from the end of the barrel. When I bought the gun I wasn't too worried about the rib because I have many extra barrels in good shape that I could have installed. Upon inspection I realized that the early magnums had a matching serial no. stamped on the barrel. The early magums are at least unusual if not rare so a matching serial no. barrel is meaningful. I considered having it shortened with screw in chokes installed or the installation of a poly choke which I could do with a shortened barrel. Both options are expensive and diminish any collector value. I had seen your tool advertised and thought I had nothing to lose to try it. Your ad that says it will pay for itself on the first job is correct. I did have to use vice grips to sqeeze the jaws under the rib but after that I was able to restore the rib to great condition. I won't say it looks new but very close to it. It would take a keen eye to notice any irregularities in the rib. The Murray vent rib tool is one of the slickest little gadgets I have ever seen and eveyone who tinkers with guns should have one. Your shipping was very promt and I am really glad I bought one. I am a very happy camper right now and thank you for coming up with the vent rib tool.

Ben, Finally had a range day with the SKS. The pull is still a little heavy for smaller hands and we did have four misfires out of our first box of surplus ammo but the photos speak for themselves. The kids love it and I couldn't be happier. As for the misfires. The box was dated 1979, I'm not surprised. The next box (vintage 1979) all fired just fine so smiles all round. Thanks for the excellent work.

I recommend everyone with a SKS watch your video, buy your fire pin upgrade, and install it for peace of mind. Thank you for providing a upgrade that truly is the most important one a SKS owner can purchase. Even if you are a purist collector, you should make this upgrade for Safety sake.

I recently bought two new firing pins with springs for my SKS’s from Midway products. I was having a problems with one of my stubborn SKS’s I recently purchased ( I am a fan of Simonov, the man who invented the SKS). At first I thought it was the firing pins. I got the old one out and replaced it with the new Murray spring edition and had the same results. After taking the bolt assembly apart for the umpteenth time, I discovered little pieces of primer were actually jammed solid the firing pin area. After some time, I remembered your web site about the popped primers. I followed the directions to the letter, and this last Sunday I took the rifle out to the range. Even though I still had a few popped primers (completely out of the cartridge) it had nothing to do with the bolt face cutting the primer. After examining the spent Wolff ammo 7.63 X 39 mm cartridge after firing, I found the primers was completely gone. This is an ammo problem, not the same problem as the bolt face cutting into the primer. Well I shot over 250 rounds though this SKS, not one stoppage. This particular rifle would stop shooting after 100 rounds on several occasions. I almost put it in the “experimental” category in the gun safe! Lucky for me I remembered the instruction card that came with the firing pins and the web site printed on the card. The rifle is now in the trusted side of the vault. Thanks to your article and your web page, you came up with a great idea.
I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate what you have done.
Thanks a ton!!

Just got back from my first trip to the range since installing the bolt assembly with your SS firing pin replacement kit in my Yugo 59/66A1. I am absolutely thrilled! Performance was 100% flawless. Dear Ben,
I purchased a spring-firepin, hammer and sear for a rifle that I shelved months ago. I thought I got a deal
when I got the rifle but when I range-tested it I realized I had gotten a failed experiment. When I
chambered the first round it slam-fired 4 shots!!! Upon disassembly I realized that some Goob had taken
a file to the hammer!!! I was skeptical as to whether a new SKS sear set would work in my rifle as it is an
SKS Sporter-D model that takes AK magazines. I decided to attempt the surgery 2 weeks ago. The
install has several more steps as the trigger assembly has an AK mag release in front of the sear spring.
In conclusion my rifle now functions flawlessly!!! It is still a long pull but smooth as butter. Your parts
resurrected my expensive, useless junk. I’m very pleased with the result.
Thank you and God Bless!

FYI, I was lucky enough to get one of the most recent productions of Murray's
FCG, "Made in the USA" hammer, sear & trigger. The parts are of the finest quality and finish and are marked "USA". I needed to
get a Franken-Bubba SKS sorted out and Americanized (922r compliant). Murry's
FCG got me well past the required number of parts, on a Yugo SKS to make it
legal.
I ordered the parts, confident that I could replace the original parts with the new
ones, well that was my first mistake. I have the necessity tools and workshop to do things like this, however two of the
pins in the trigger assembly did not want to come out. So now I get to the point
my pin punch is mushrooming, then it happened I bent the safety and it broke off
when I tried to bend it back. At this point I knew that those pins (that had been
in 40+ years) were not coming out by my hand with out lots of collateral damage.
Well this SKS has maching numbers and I wanted to keep it that way, so I
decided to let the professional take over. I sent my FCG and the new parts to
Murray's and they installed them and repaired the safety, at a really fair price.
I am 100% happy with the parts and the service. So to anyone that may want the
compliant FCG form Murray's I would say just send yours to Ben for a no problem
install at a fair price.

Dear Sir,
I recently installed your GV-1 SKS Gas Valve into my old Yugo 59/66. The by-design oversize dimensions of your gas valve totally eliminated the slop that was causing all the gas leakage. It now cycles and functions semi-auto every time - a big change in behavior!

Hi,
I wanted to thank you for your recent work on my SKS bolt. I have a really beautiful Russian Tula, all matching and in new condition. The bolt face was nicely but gently polished, and the recoil spring and new firing pin fit, look and function perfectly. I've put about 500 rounds through it since your work, and everything is perfect. I have a lot more confidence with the gun knowing that the potential for slam-fire and other bolt/firing pin issues have been eliminated with your work.
Thanks again. SKS owners really appreciate your service.

The following in an excerpt from an article by Massad Ayoob, that was originally printed
in the March/April 2009 issue of Backwoods Home Magazine (www.backwoodshome.com)
One downside of the SKS is found in the area of safety. The firing pin tapers somewhat in its channel, and when the gun gets dirty or old lubricant “coagulates,” it can get stuck in the forward position. This can result in “slamfires” in which the rifle goes off when the bolt is dropped on the first live cartridge loaded in, and it can also cause the gun to “go full automatic.” Sergei Simonov saw that coming, and he originally equipped the gun with a firing pin return spring to keep that from happening. This is one reason that Soviet military production SKSs from 1945 through 1950 are particularly prized by gun enthusiasts. This feature was left out as a production economy in later ComBloc iterations of the SKS.
If you own one of the latter—and you probably do, since they are by far the most common —you would serve yourself well to get a replacement parts kit from Murray’s Guns at www.murraysguns.com. |

I have owned nine SKS carbines to date; a Murray's spring-loaded firing pin is a no-brainer for these rifles. It costs very little, does nothing to detract from the performance or value of the rifle (as you can keep the original parts it replaces), increases reliability and durability, and provides an extra measure of safety that just might prevent a truly unfortunate occurrence.
I recommend one of your firing pins to every SKS owner I know.

Thanks. I have a short story about this...I was trying out a new Zytel mag in my SKS, that has only had maybe 50 rounds shot in it; I noticed that the primer on the milsurp round I hand-cycled through the rifle had a very small dimple in it....scared the hell out of me! If it'd been a commercial round, I have little doubt it would have fired and made a nice hole in my office floor...
So I did a search for SKS firing pin, found you, and the rest, as they say, is history....
THANKS FOR HAVING A SAFE ALTERNATIVE!

Ben,
First of all I want to thank you for the service you performed and the springs. Took the Russian SKS to the range Sunday 29 March 2009 and it performed without a single flaw. I even did a rapid fire without a single hitch. All the primers looked normal and not one popped. I will certainly put out the word on your firing pins and bolt face machining. I'm certain my SKS will perform in any contest that may arise in the future. NOTE: I would put out on your add on the main page w/o a foot note that the bolts MUST be honed and beveled with this installation. Great work and research in the problem that existed with the SKS.
Your a dying breed in the art of gunsmith machining and a good and honest man to boot. God bless you and yours.

I just received my three replacement firing pins in this morning's mail and, of course, couldn't wait to install them. I replaced one pin in a Chinese SKS and another in a Yugo model (the third one is a Christmas gift for a son). Fitting your new firing pins with return springs was a piece of cake in both guns. I now can shoot with fewer worries about slam fires. What really worried me most was going out hunting and spooking game with a slam fire or double when I loaded the chamber. I never worry about shooting myself or someone else since I know where the muzzle is at all times, but running off that big buck, hog, or even armadillo because of an accidental discharge would ruin my day.
Incidentally, I would recommend that anyone replacing their firing pins pay careful attention to how the originals came out. My Chinese and Yugo guns had entirely different pins, and I stored them in your parts bag and wrote down detailed replacement instructions - just in case.
Thanks for your quick shipping and a well-made, safe product.

Let me start by saying you guys are great. I've had an
sks in the family for a long time and now it is mine so the first thing i did
was a re-blued it, put a tapco t6 stock and red dot scope on it.
Looks great now, but recently bought a 1000 rounds of wolf ammo and guess what,
nothing but problems now. Switched back to some older ammo but
still acts up every 10 rounds or so. With the wolf ammo I get either
a failure to eject or stovepiping about every 5 rounds or so. I ordered the new
firing pin from you guys and installed it with no problems, glad i don't have to
worry about slamfires. I ordered a new gas valve from another cnc company
that guarentees it will solve 99% of sks problems but it actually made my
problem worse. Instead of every 5 rounds I now had problems every round.
Sometimes it would not even cycle the next round so i wrapped a white towel
around the gas valve and fired 5 rounds and needless to say the shirt is no
longer white. I ordered you stainless steel gas valve and installed and
guess what, ABSOLUTELY NO MALFUNCTIIONS. 40 Rounds straight with 0 problems. How
owesome is that, my sks looks and now acts like a brand new gun. Will last
for 40 more years of fun. But thats not all, I have plenty of other guns
that i have modified for performance and etc, so i have ordered alot of parts
from other places and suppliers but never have i had the level of customer
service as with you guys. Your orders are quick, straigh forward and what
i like the most is the directions that come with the part. Your
installation directions are as close to idiot proof as i think you can get and
very detailed, which is something you just can't get from large distributers.
I look forward to doing more business with you for all my future sks needs and
just wanted to say thanks for being owesome. Oh yeah and sorry for being
long winded!

The Bad News:
A few days ago I received my order for your SKS FP mod. I field stripped my
SKS and proceeded to attempt to remove the drift-pin from the bolt. After
beating on my brass punch with a large hammer until the punch folded over I
decided to quit. I took the new FP to a local gunsmith who quickly removed the
pin and installed the new FP.
The Good News:
I haven't reinstalled the bolt, as I am doing some other work on the rifle,
but I get a nice warm, fuzzy feeling just feeling the spring-return action of
your product. That, and the knowledge that I have eliminated a source of
potentially dangerous slam fires are well-worth the price of your product
Sincerely,

Ben,
I just had to email you to let you know I receive the firing pin and (believe
it or not) I got it installed. I was within 5 minutes of packing the whole
bolt and new pin to ship to you to install it for me. But I decided to
give it another go and I’m glad I did. When I first started
researching an SKS and learned about the “floating firing pin problem”, I was
turned off and had about decided against an SKS. Then I found your website and
read about your product. I knew that I would be ordering the firing pin
from you.
My son will be shooting this gun along with me and have a little
more confidence that the gun is safe is worth a million.

Hey Ben,
Just wanted to write you a well-deserved epilogue to a story with a happy ending. I went out and shot my SKS with your improved bolt assembly yesterday, and put 70 rounds through it with zero failures, after a nasty history of malfunctions. Just to let you know I installed your new firing pin in my SKS. The fit was perfect like a factory part. I took the rifle to the range today and all the slam fires, and repeat shots were now a thing of the past.
The rifle performed great, I am very happy.
Thank you

Ben,
Received the firing pin kit. It dropped right in and immediately increased my confidence in the SKS about 80% "GRIN".
Thanks for the prompt service

Ben,
Recieved the new pin and gas valve. They both work GREAT!!! My Yugo fires
perfectly now, no jams, misfires or shortcycles. Thanks for putting out good
parts at a good price. I've sung your praises on
Surplusrifle.com forums. Hopefully more new owners will be coming your way
for parts.
Thanks once again for everything!

To all at Murray's,
Just an email to let you know how much I appreciate the outstanding service and SKS Firing Pin.
It has been quite a while since I had a such friendly and helpful sales interaction..
The pin arrived extremely fast, as promised, and works far better than I had hoped.
No more slam-fire, and not having to break down the bolt at the range to tap out the seized pin is a dream come true.
Thanks a million.

Mr. Murray,
I'd just like to thank you again for fixing my bolt problem, and for doing it so quickly. I received the repaired bolt assembly last friday and plan on trying it out this week, I don't expect it will give me any problems.
I wish I could find a gunsmith of your quality and with your willingness to help customers in my neck of the woods.
Thanks again,

Mr. Murray,
I wanted to tell you that your firing pin and gas valve work great. I went to the range two weeks ago with the old style pin still in my sks. I fired about 100 rounds and it started to misfire. Every third or fourth round would not fire. I looked at the rounds and saw that the firing pin was not hitting the primer hard enough. I pulled the bolt out and found that the firing pin was stuck to the rear. This was good because I didn't get slam fires. I packed up and went home. The mail man had come and your pin was there. I took the bolt apart and replaced the pin and gas valve, cleaned the weapon up and packed it away. Last weekend I was back at the range and fired off about 250 rounds. I went home pulled the weapon apart and the pin was still freed up and returning like it's designed to. You're a good man Mr. Murray!!! I'll be sending you another money order for a pin and valve. Look for it this coming week.
I'll tell everyone I know that they need to get your pin kit.
Thanks again.

Well, didn't think I'd be needing your services again....one SKS seemed enough for anyone. Little did I know they'd start to look "pretty"....
Anyway, just wanted to confirm prices...couldn't tell if the web site had been updated recently..... I would like to send my bolt for disassembly and installation of a new SS firing pin and spring. With the prices listed, I make it out to be $41.00. It's sitting in the box waiting for your confirmation. By the way, the one you did for me last year continues to function beautifully after hundreds of rounds.

Ben,
Spent the day at the range, and just wanted to let you know that I went through about 300 rounds with my SKS (with your new firing pin system installed) with absolutely no FTFs. Used ammo made by Wolf, UMC, Sellior and Ballot, and some unlabled mystery stuff.

Dear Ben,
Thanks again for the pin. I got the pinches in the
mail today and decided to install it. The installation
was very straightforward and quite easy, thanks for
your instructions! The pin did not require any filing
at all. As for the base, I simply went to the local
harware store and grabbed the first short piece of
copper tubing that I saw (1 1/4" in diameter and an
inch or so long). It did the job very well, I have set
the bolt on top of the tube and let the pin drop
through the hole.
Thanks again and happy holidays,

Hello,
I wanted to let you know after receiving the "cure" for my sks, which
installed as smooth as glass, I was very pleased with the quality of the
parts. My russian model 45 sks cycled handloads and wolf ammo with no slam
firing!
Thanks again for a much needed up grade to the sks.

Ben,
Thank you very much for the new FP for my Yugo. I finally had a chance to take
it to the range and it worked flawlessly. To answer your question, yes I was
shooting 122gr. Wolf HP black box ammo.
Thanks again for your services.

I recieved my SKS firing pin today, very fast shipping. You have a great product for making the SKS a safer firearm, and I will refer anybody I know to order one. This is especially true after mine slam-fired, nearly taking someone's hand off with the bolt.
Anyways, thank you for the great product and fast shipping.

Hello Ben,
I finally got a chance to get out to the range today and try the new spring
loaded firing pin I purchased from you for my SKS. The China Sport
ammunition I was using has very soft primers and I was getting slam fires
and multi-bursts most of the time and becoming paranoid in the process.
After installing the firing pin and spring combination, I had absolutely no
slam fires at all out of the 100 shots fired today.
I heartily endorse your product and would recommend it to anyone who owns an
SKS. It made a believer out of me.

Mr. Murray,
Just a short note to say thanks for the outstanding job you did on my SKS bolt. Took it out to the range today and it functioned perfectly.
Ever since I got the SKS the thought of a slam fire occurring has been in the back of my mind every time I fired the rifle. Now, I ain't got to worry anymore.
Gave your web site info to both managers of the range and gun shop I use and they said they would make other SKS owners aware of your service.
Once again, thanks for a job well done.

Ben,
I just wanted to write and say "thank you". The firing pin and spring
replacement for the SKS arrived a week ago and was installed in a
matter of minutes.
I'm highly impressed by the quality of the milling -- no burrs or
other problems. It dropped right in and works perfectly. To insure
proper function, I very, VERY lightly oiled the pin and channel with
CLP, let it soak for a few minutes, and then thoroughly dried both
parts. I don't want any oil in there, but I want to protect both from
rust. The teflon from the CLP helps lubricate a little.
When using Wolf ammo with the hard, mil-spec primers, the firing pin
indent is infintesimally shallower, presumably due to the resistance
of the spring or the slightly different shape of the pin. This had
absolutely no effect whatsoever on the actual firing and was
noticeable only to the trained eye.
Again, I wanted to say "thanks" for your excellent pin. $37 is a very
small price to pay for me to sleep well, assured that slamfires and
other such incidents will be much more rare than before. For
reference, I've never had a slamfire or doubling, but purchased your
pin specifically as a preventative measure.
Cheers!
Pete

Hey Ben,
I just wanted to let you know that I got my new firing pin in the mail
and put it in this afternoon. I haven't fired the rifle with it in yet,
but I know my rifle is safer now. With my old pin, my primers got
dimpled just from loading rounds from the magazine. That doesn't happen
anymore.
I really appreciate what you're doing and I'll certainly
recommend you to anyone I meet who has an SKS.
Thanks again,

Hi Ben,
I finally got out to the range & ran about 150 rounds through a 1963 vinatage chinese SKS. It worked fine
& no problems.
Group was 3 inches at 100 yards with wolf 123 gr ammo. I can do better with Winchester Whitebox FMJ
& open apeture sights.
Additions to the SKS:
- Trigger work
- New hammer, sear spring & polish
- Apeture sight on rear is .150 ( I just ordered .050 and .093) to see if this will get group tighter
- New ejector spring
I will email back once I install the smaller ap sight with results.
Thanks
Great little device you have.
